Bishop GoHL RE-ELECTED ON THE FIRST BALLOT
Words of Thanksgiving
Though I will have the opportunity to present my report later in this agenda, I simply wish to say thank you and thanks be to God for God’s indescribable gift of Jesus Christ. It is a solemn privilege to serve God, with and among God’s faithful people in Delaware-Maryland Synod, and I do not ever take that privilege for granted.
What makes this possible is the tremendous partnership we share with our Synod Council – the finest of shared leadership teams, led by my colleague, partner and friend, John Auger; our incredibly gifted and talented Synod Staff – every last one of them gifted, faithful and sacrificial with their time and myriad of talents; and the support and encouragement of beloved friends, and that of my dear family – especially Arwyn, Saliese, David, Andrew and Joyanne.
When I was confirmed on Palm Sunday in 1988, my then-pastor, Raymond Lorthior, assigned me this confirmation verse: You shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to dwell in from Isaiah 58. This is my north-star verse, and I return to it often. It was the preaching text when I received the church’s gift of Ordination 22 years ago, as well as when I was installed into each of the calls I’ve served, including when I became bishop of the synod 6 years ago. In these years, since Confirmation and particularly after Ordination, I return to these words in season and out, day by day.
In our ministry as the people of God in the Delaware-Maryland Synod, leaven in the larger life of the ELCA and for the church catholic, I recognize that those words speak so much of our life together – in worship, fellowship, learning and serving you, we are doing the hard work of repairing the breach between the church and world, and restoring the streets, at the intersection of our heritage and our hope for the future.
Thank you, Jesus, for this holy people and our life together. To you be the glory, always and in all ways. Amen.’
Thank you. Bishop Bill Gohl
